<description>Most people consider entertaining a stress-inducing hassle better left to someone else and would rather go out to a party than host one. My grandmother, on the other hand, throws a great party and enjoys doing it! In recent years, her parties have become numbered and the expectations changed. Grandma’s once all-inclusive Thanksgiving dinner, for example, has taken on a potluck style as her age and arthritis prevent her from hosting the way she used to.

With its traditional, comfortable, and social associations, tea service is the most direct example of the intersection between the elderly user group and a love of entertaining. The embarassment of losing the ability to cook and ultimately entertain is embodied by the tea set. Serving tea and coffee at the end of a gathering is the host’s last offering. The act of serving itself is a tedious one made exponentially more difficult with the deterioration of hand function. The clatter of cup on saucer that results from shaky hands is evidence of the struggle of serving and acts as an audible reminder of the server’s condition.

Celebrating a brilliant mechanism that we use every day but hardly consider, I recreated the spring ring clasp using the CAD modeling software Solidworks. Considering the thickness and flexibility of the printing material, I was challenged to design the clasp in multiple pieces that would snap and stay together.
The images below represent my process--from the initial ideation phase to problem solving, building, and finally the end result.

Bent Lamination
Using the woodworking technique of bent lamination, I was assigned the task of creating a container for 6 apples. With the joint as my main design detail, I focused my efforts on craftsmanship--keeping the design simple and elegant.

Carving
As an introduction to carving, I was to make a vessel of multiple pieces of wood featuring a distinct texture on each the inside and outside. I began by carving out the interior space from each of the eight pieces, leaving the natural carved texture as evidence of the hand-crafted process. Once joined, I treated the exterior of the vessel with a gem-like faceted surface, providing a surprising and exciting geometric contrast to the soft, natural interior.

Tin-Plated Steel
An exploration of sheet metal and obsession with metal joinery led me to create this adjustable toy. The introduction of copper wire and brass tubing gives this object the flexibility to slide and glide in multiple directions--inspiring the user to linger on, play with, and solve this pliable puzzle.

Aluminum
There was only one limitation to this project: material. Given a sheet of aluminum, I was challenged to sift by tinkering through the endless possibilities presented by this malleable metal. Mesmerized by the tension fit, I spent much time perfecting minuscule measurements in an effort to achieve the super satisfying tension fit that slides and locks in place to create surprising windows into the cubical form.

		<description>Fin Loft Model
I can now claim to know this acorn squash inside and out. After precisely illustrating the form and measuring it into twentieths, I applied those measurements to the squash itself and acquired the exact shapes of the cross-sections with the help of my careful knife work. Using these precise silhouettes, I was able to construct a fin-loft model of the squash to specifications.

Works-Like Model
This "works-like" model was a design challenge unlike any I have faced thus far. After drawing "bicycle derailleur" from a hat, I was to create a model that demonstrates not what the system looks like, but how it works. A bicycle's derailleur is a complex mechanical system that, in its simplest form, pushes the bike's chain from one cassette to the next while simultaneously readjusting the chain's tension. After much research, bike riding and gear-changing, I was able to fully understand the system, at which point I boiled the information down in order to create an interactive model that can even explain the system to someone who has never seen a bicycle.

Bristol Form Study
In another formal exploration, I translated my two-dimensional orthographic illustrations into a pristine, scaled bristol model.
